How do we develop a player in the game and how do the motions look authentically?

Textur That’s one of the main questions our developers have to answer every day. A lot of attention to detail, creativity and technical know-how is necessary for their work. A look behind the backdrop is worth it for sure. We didn’t want to introduce the team in a boring way, so we decided to interview them and they shot a couple of screenshots of their daily work as well. You will find the results in the article below.

How do you create a handball player who, in the end, you’re able to see on the court?

Felix (3D-Artist):

First of all we search for reference pictures of an active handball player (model) and also photograph the player in action. After that we use the silhouette of the player to create a 3D model. Then the photos will be projected to the model to develop the texture. The simplified structure of the skeleton is going to be copied so that you can move the model.

Last week you guys were out to record the „Motion Capturing“ for the aminations. What is „Motion Capturing“ and what do you need it for?

Peer (Animator):

„Motion Capture“ is a technology which allows us to transfer movements of a real person to a virtual character. In order to do that an actor puts on a suit. The suit is full of image sensors, for example on the players head, hand, foot or knee. These sensors are going to get captured by a high speed camera in a three-dimensional space, for example by a diving fall-away shot, and get transferred to the virtual character. For this function the player has a virtual skeleton which is controlled by the marker. With a special software you can use the data which you have won to animate every single player in the game. For a handball action game we need a lot of takes so that not every player does the same movements.
